Year of the T-Shirt

July 27, 2011 Apparel, Features

We recently had the oppertunity to have a chat with Justin Young who has been attempting to wear a different shirt every day of the year. He has documented each day, and you can find more information about him below.

What is YOTT?

YOTT = Year of the Tshirt 2011.  It is a fun, unique and exciting campaign to expose a wide variety of designs and styles to Tshirt enthusiast.  It is also an opportunity to provide designers and artists an outlet to get their work in front of the world.  I use the site (www.yearofthetshirt.com) to illustrate the tees, but I also use social media applications like Twitter and Facebook to promote the brand / artist’s links, promotions, events, etc…

Also… I don’t have the sexiest torso and I thought it would be a great idea to get free Tshirts to help me cover it up.

What gave you the idea to start YOTT?

The idea of YOTT didn’t start with me.  It was founded by Brian Shevlin in 2010.  He is the owner of a very cool, underground art studio call Con Artist (http://www.conartistnyc.com/). I met Brian in 2010 by doing research to conduct a similar project as YOTT.  Brain saw my excitement about Tshirts and decided to pass on YOTT to me to continue in 2011

Have you run into any problems with this project?

Knock on wood…no real problems, except finding a place to put all of the Tshirts and deciding what to wear…there are just so many options ha-ha.  On a serious note, time is probably the hardest part.  I wish I was able to dedicate more time to the campaign, but unfortunately life gets in the way and by life I mean bills / work (the good old 9 to 5).  However, I do my best to manage my time and I think it is working.  I hope one day YOTT can grow, but for now it is a very cool way to promote Tshirts and meet some really great people behind each designs.

Any last shout outs?

I have to give a shout out to Brian Shevlin for giving me this great project!  He is an awesome dude.  I also have to give a shout out to all of the Tshirt Designers / Companies who provided me with such amazing Tshirts.  They pretty much gave me their, Tshirt off their back, to keep this campaign a live.  Without them, I would just a be a topless man with nothing to wear or to do.  Another shout out goes to Edward Chan (http://www.emchan.com/), he the one who took these amazing photos.  THX bro!  And last but not least, my girlfriend.  She’s been supportive with the project.  She is also the woman behind the camera calling…TAKING the shots!
